What is a Raw Food Diet? |
Most of us are used to eating only cooked food. However, if food is heated to 116 degrees or above, essential enzymes in the food are destroyed. What’s the result? Indigestion. That’s where a raw food diet comes in. A raw food diet is one composed of uncooked fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds, beans and other plant items. Having a raw food diet ensures that at least 75 per cent of our food is eaten raw. What are the benefits of a raw food diet? Apart from improved digestion, a raw food diet gives more energy without extra calories, and beautiful skin. It also contains a low proportion of saturated and trans fat, and sodium. This aids in weight loss and prevents heart diseases and cancer. In addition, according to a Journal of Nutrition study, a raw food diet lowers the cholesterol level. However, a raw food diet is not without its side-effects. It may result in persisting headaches, food cravings and even nausea. It is not appropriate for children, anemic people and pregnant women. In addition, according to a study made by the University of Washington, a raw food diet results in lower bone mass. Thus, people, especially women in the mid-forties, who are risk for osteoporosis must avoid this type of diet.
